MISSION
The mission of the Marblehead Counseling Center is to contribute
to improving the quality of life for our entire community: children, teenagers,
adults, and families. To this end, the Marblehead Counseling Center provides a
catalyst and forum for discussing special issues and a broad range of services to
meet the needs of individuals and families. Special focus is on alcohol and drug
misuse, stresses of life in a modern community, such as financial and career
difficulties, adolescent stresses, family difficulties and individual issues or
tensions resulting from housing, religious differences, etc. The primary tools are
education and counseling, which includes special listening and caring, facilitated by
a staff of highly trained professionals with diverse experience.
HISTORY
In 1969 a group of Marblehead residents realized that there was
little being done on the North Shore to address the counseling needs of children,
teens, and adults. Especially pressing was the lack of services for substance abuse
as well as for mental health problems like depression and family upheaval. In
response, the group founded the Marblehead Counseling Center to provide direct
services to individuals and families and to be a forum for addressing community
needs.
Thirty-five years later the Marblehead Counseling Center remains true to that vision.
Focusing its efforts on Marblehead, it has provided over 110,000 therapy sessions to
help people in the tough times in their lives. Special outreach to teens has assisted
them and their families through those difficult, growing years. Group treatment has
covered women’s issues, single parenting, addictions, adult children raised in
addicted families, men’s concerns, children with attention deficit disorder and
teenage girls. In recent years MCC’s therapy with couples and families has grown
tremendously.
Although the Center was originally funded as a substance abuse outpatient facility,
it has expertise in most areas of treatment. Especially strong is its work with
youth, with family and marriage issues, with depression, and, of course, with the
misuse of alcohol and other drugs.
MCC has always been involved in, and often initiated, task forces and committees to
address specific community issues such as substance abuse, adolescent issues,
societal violence, housing, youth sports, and families in financial struggle. This
participation arises from a belief that a service agency must be integrated into and
integral to the community it serves.
