Marblehead Counseling Center (MCC) provides programs
and services to the community in seven primary ways. This includes counseling, group
therapy and support, psychopharmacology, parent support, education, mediation, and
consultation and community service.
COUNSELING/PSYCHOTHERAPY: MCC offers individual,
couple and family counseling for children, youths, adults and elders on a wide range
of issues and problems. Therapists meet with clients in private sessions to
help them develop new approaches and arrive at solutions for the issues that have
brought them to MCC.

PARENTING SUPPORT: Parent Enrichment
Workshops
Currently MCC is focusing on parent education through a program of parent education
workshops based on the nationally recognized model, “Systematic Training for
Effective Parenting”, or STEP. This 6-session course helps parents to refine
skills in order to make their parenting less frustrating and more productive.
The course covers the four types of misbehavior, how changing the parent’s reaction
gets different results, encouraging rather than praising children, effective
communication with children, cooperative problem solving and collaboration, and ways
to use discipline rather than punishing. Courses are presented to three levels
of parents: those with pre-schoolers, with grade school students, and with
pre-teenagers/teenagers. In addition, special STEP training is offered for
teachers of preschoolers and grandparents.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION
MCC sponsors
education and training programs on topics that are of interest to community members.
Programs are conducted by MCC staff as well as invited guests who have expertise in a
particular area. Programs have been offered for Women in Transition, Parenting,
Alcohol and Drug Awareness, Conflict Resolution, Aging with Grace, and Grandparenting.
MEDIATION: The Mediation Program
provides an alternative approach to dispute resolution. Trained mediators help
parties in conflict identify the issues, communicate concerns, and constructively
explore possible solutions to problems. Mediation can help resolve disputes
between business and consumers, landlords and tenants, parents and children, and
neighbors and friends.

CONSULTATION AND
SPECIALIZED TRAINING: Counseling
Center staff members work with Town agencies and the school system to provide
individual consultation and special programs and workshops. MCC staffs an
employee assistance program for town workers, and trains department heads and
supervisors respond to the needs of troubled employees. MCC staff members are
also actively involved in community committees and task forces. |
